Historically, there exist dichotomies in quantitative finance such as vendor vs. custom built, standard vs. unique, or conventional vs. alternative.
However, traditionally opposing approaches are now being used to complement each other in uncovering greater analytical potential. Internal custom-built quant systems increasingly leverage standard components, machine learning models, and precalculated data while hosted systems incorporate more open source libraries that create transportability of code and skill, as well as facilitate rapid development. Although this trend has been growing over time, the onset of COVID-19 has fueled its popularity among the traditional manager community as they struggle with access to core systems during the pandemic.
